I can't believe Tuesday is the last day of summer school for the kids. I am so incredibly sad to leave them! They are absolutely amazing, and I wish I had so much more time with them. I would love for them to be in my class this fall, but know that I will have so many fresh and beautiful faces to meet :) We started doing end of summer school assessments and it was unreal to see the growth. I had the privilege of working with our lowest reading group, which many were pre-readers. I tested one young boy who sat there and read a book to me! I literally just sat there and smiled so big! I praised him so much that he was probably like "Uh okay lady?" But I am honestly so proud of him.
We worked on so many things this past week. I was able to teach math where we decomposed numbers up to nine and made addition sentences! It is crazy to think they went from counting shapes to making equations in 5 short, short weeks. I taught my intervention group to rhyme and it was honestly so adorable. We broke apart the words and sung each sound until we could put it together. They did so amazing and really started reading the words!
My ultimate favorite part of the day is character building. I was telling my little 6 year olds all about my favorite 6 year old in the world, my brother. I asked them where I should take him when he visits me and my little boy says "I can ask my mom if he can come over to my house. I think he would like to see my chickens." It was so thoughtful of him and I love how caring he is. And honestly, I think my brother would LOVE him.
I think I have mentioned so many parts of the day that are my favorite, but my true favorite is the end of the day hugs. We do not leave without hugs and it has become such a huge part of their routine. We let each other know that we will miss each other, and they show that they truly mean it. They have the biggest hugs and the biggest smiles. What more can you ask for?
This week is the fourth of July, one of my favorite holidays! There is a drought in Northern Indiana, which means no fireworks. I am so bummed for my family because we all appreciate them so much. I love hearing my mom and sisters pick out their favorites! It is such a tradition for us. I will be spending the day at the pool and the night at the Diamondbacks game with great company. So while I am sitting under the fireworks in my patriotic attire, I will definitely be thinking about my family miles away.
This week will be tough because it is my brother's birthday. He means the world to me, and it is hard to not be there. He is honestly my favorite 6 year old in this whole world and I think about him every single day. The relationship I have with him is so perfect. I have never met another 6 year old with so much character. At the same time, he is so compassionate. If you ever get the chance, have a 6 year old explain their thoughts. You'll be so intrigued.
Happy birthday, Brady! I now have a new favorite seven year old. May all of your wishes come true! I miss you so much, but my love will fly to you on angel's wings :) Cannot wait to celebrate in Phoenix!
