“Reflect on your use of assessment in the classroom. On a scale of 1 – 10, ten being highest, how would you rate yourself. What are your plans for becoming a “10” if you are not there already? How are you using assessment in the classroom to guide your instruction? Describe how assessment results are used to differentiate instruction within your class.”
As far as my use of assessment in my classroom, I feel like there is a lot of it! Fridays are "show what you know" days in my classroom, and my kids do so awesome with it! Every day there is a way to assess them through check for understandings and just by talking with them and watching them. However, Fridays are our days when everything is individualized without my support. On a scale of 1-10, I would say I am right in the middle at a 5. Of course, there will always be room for improvement as a teacher! I do not struggle as much with creating assessments that are relevant and similar to the lesson and instruction. However, creating lessons that are differentiated for every single student can be difficult. At times, by highest math student may be struggling with the assessment. For example, he is amazing at addition and subtraction, but skip counting was very difficult and I was not expecting to differentiate for that. At the same time, I have to differentliate my lessons for my lower students who are still working on number sense. I am going to continue to strive at finding the perfect level that will challenge each and every one of my students, but not be confusing or intimidating. I am using my assessment to guide future lessons that build upon one another. The scores are used to help decide which students need extra tutoring, or which students need my one-on-one support when my students are working individually. Assessment is so important for all of these reasons and help guide future instruction for each and every child.
All my love,
Jace
