It's official. Today I signed my first contract and took a huge leap into the
"real world." I had an interview and was hired by Brunson-Lee Elementary School in Phoenix, Arizona. I am not familiar with the Phoenix area and have spent hours tilting my head left and right to figure out where on the map I will be. However, no matter what way I turned my head, I was beyond satisfied. My school is an all-walking school so there is no transportation provided. As for the demographics, the majority of the population is low-income and Hispanic. This population is perfect for me in so many ways and I am smiling just thinking about being an active member in this community. I have always been a big believer in diversity and agree 100% that it helps make America so wonderful and unique. For once in my life, I get to step on the other side of the fence and walk into a classroom 216 days being the minority. There are so many times that the majority take that privilege for granted and I am eager to discover more of myself through this. Another amazing part of this school is that the staff is young. This excites me because I think my generation is powerful and grew up learning to take a stand and make a change. The energetic, spirited students at Purdue University made me open my eyes to this revolution and see that college students are willing to go to great heights to make the world a better place. This is what excites me about the hundreds of new corps members I am about to meet through Teach for America. Isn't change a beautiful thing? You hear people saying all the time that a mind is a beautiful thing to waste. It's even more wasteful when you don't take a stand and make a difference. Get off your feet.
It's go time.
All my love,
Jacey
